In order to improve the safety and ambience of the central campus area we are closing the Fielding Johnson car park for a six month trial period

As part of the long term plans for the University campus and in response to feedback asking for a more pedestrian and cycle-friendly campus, we have taken the decision to close the Fielding Johnson car park for a trial period of six months.

The closure will take effect from Monday 6 July when it is taken over for our annual graduation ceremonies. While there will obviously be a loss of parking spaces on the main campus, we expect to be able to accommodate colleagues in other university car parks nearby.

While we do appreciate that this is an inconvenience for some, the closure of the car park will provide a wide range of benefits for the university as a whole.

Closing the car park will improve the ambience and atmosphere of the central campus area and the lack of traffic will make it much safer for our staff and students. It will also contribute towards our commitment to reduce our carbon footprint by encouraging alternative travel options.

If the pilot is successful we will look to close the car park permanently and landscape the area to make it more attractive and provide a social space for staff and students. It will also give us the flexibility to more easily hold outdoor events, for example open days, freshers’ events and our Festival of Careers.

In closing this car park, we do need to ensure that the parking permit allocation system remains fair and equitable, so the closure will coincide with greater enforcement of current parking permits, and improvements to the process for visitor and contractor parking to ensure that vehicles in campus car parks really do need to be there.

The disabled car park spaces in the Fielding Johnson car park will be relocated on the campus ensuring that those in greatest need will be catered for.

If you are looking to change the way you travel to work, then please take a look at the staff travel pages, where there are a range of benefits, including discounts on public transport, information about car sharing (including our parking spaces specifically for car sharers) and support for those looking to cycle to work including our 300 space underground bike park.

If you have any questions about the changes to the car park, then please do email and we will respond to your query within five working days.
