A new approach to appraisals: Performance Development Discussion

Our Strategic Plan commits to making our approach to appraisals transparent, understandable and fair. We are therefore launching a new appraisal process – Performance Development Discussion (PDD).

We are currently analysing the results of the recent Staff Survey and these indicate that during the past year, many of you have not had an appraisal.

We therefore need to ensure that there is a consistent and effective approach to appraisals across the University. An effective appraisal process is vitally important to achieve the transformation we wish to bring about.

It is important that we recognise your contributions to the University, which are made in many different ways. We also need to ensure that your PDD is an honest, open and supportive ongoing conversation within which you and your manager set meaningful objectives for the next period.

You should expect to receive a PDD, using the new documentation, before the end of 2016 to help maximise your strengths and develop your skills even further.

All colleagues, both those in Professional Services and those engaged in academic activities should complete part A of the PDD documentation. Part B should be completed only by those engaged in academic activities and will be released, with further guidance, later this year.

We have put together a package of training materials to help you. The approach was piloted earlier this year in Museum Studies and Geography with some success and we would like to thank those who took part.

Please visit the Performance Development Discussion webpage to find out more about this process and download the new documents.
