A more sustainable approach to the delivery of orders

Deliveries from Office Depot will only be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays

Office Depot (OD) is the University’s mandated supplier of stationery, offering next day delivery to desktop regardless of order value. This means their lorries are often on our site daily.

Whilst OD is based locally in Leicester and this degree of flexibility is convenient, it is very unsustainable and wasteful of resources, so we are proposing to encourage departments to forward plan a little better and for there to be only two deliveries a week to the University.

Reducing the delivery frequency will result in a saving of 985.5kg CO2e per annum, the equivalent of the energy use of an average house for a month. To offset this, 26 tree seedlings would need to be grown for 10 years. Reducing energy use is much more preferable. It will also reduce the cost to Office Depot of providing the service, enabling us to negotiate better deals.

Details of how this will work…

  • From 1st April 2018 OD will only deliver to the University on a Tuesday and a Thursday
  • Orders received on Thursday/Friday/Monday will be delivered on a Tuesday
  • Orders received on a Tuesday and Wednesday will be delivered on a Thursday
  • In the event of an unforeseen urgency it will still be possible to request next day delivery – please contact Anthony Midgley in the Procurement Unit for further details
