Wireless and remote access to data

Wireless connectivity – a Wi-Fi service – and a Laptop service provide flexibility in how you can work on your research.

WiFi

The University Wi-Fi service is an eduroam service that allows Wi-Fi Internet access on campus or at any eduroam supporting institution using your University IT account username and password. Eduroam Wi-Fi allows access at thousands of participating institutions worldwide, and many in the UK.

eduroam - (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. Eduroam allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to obtain Internet connectivity across their own campus and when visiting the campuses of other participating institutions by simply opening their laptop.

Laptop service

Laptop service users are provided the equivalent of the desktop PC service, whether on, or away from campus or on the move.

The service includes Windows 7 and Office 2010 and benefits including:

  • Automatic Z: drive and email synchronisation
  • Docking station
  • Automatic wi-fi connection - Whilst you are on campus the laptop will automatically connect to the University wireless network. It will also be set up to connect eduroam wi-fi, so will work at other Universities providing eduroam wi-fi.
  • Encryption security – Laptop hard drives will be encrypted (using a PIN when you first switch on the computer).

Are you working with multiple copies of the same data file?  Are you working on the latest version?
When working away from campus pay particular attention to file version control (and data synchronisation) – think carefully about file naming with dates and version numbers, whether you have multiple versions of files, which is the latest copy, or master version or a back-up.
