Funder requirements

Research funders have a range of requests or requirements that those who receive funding need to follow in relation to plans for managing data, short-term storage and long-term preservation of data, sharing data and publishing output etc.

What do research funders demand?

Research funders have a range of requests or requirements that those who receive funding need to follow in relation to plans for managing data, short-term storage and long-term preservation of data, sharing data and publishing output etc.

"In 2011, Research Councils UK (RCUK) issued a set of Common Principles on Research Data Policy. These push for data to be made openly available with as few restrictions as possible in a timely and responsible manner. Most research funders have issued data policies, however the extent and coverage of these varies greatly. In some cases researchers are also directed to good practise guides, which provide recommendations on documenting and maintaining research" The Digital Curation Centre (DCC)

All members of Research Councils UK (RCUK) have signed a statement of Statement of Expectations on Societal and Economic Impact.  This requires funding recipients to "take responsibility for the curation, management and exploitation of data for future use."

The DCC monitor research funders' requirements, commonly setting out expectations and facilities in terms of:

  • published outputs (policy on published outputs e.g. journal articles and conference papers)
  • data (a datasets policy or statement on access to maintenance of electronic resources)
  • time limits (set timeframes for making content accessible or preserving research outputs)
  • data plan (requirements to consider data creation, management or sharing in the grant application)
  • access/sharing (promotion of Open Access journals, deposit in repositories, data sharing or reuse)
  • long-term curation (stipulations on long-term maintenance and preservation of research outputs)
  • monitoring (whether compliance is monitored or action taken such as withholding funds)
  • guidance (provision of FAQs, best practice guides, toolkits and support staff)
  • repository (provision of a repository to make published research outputs accessible)
  • data centre (provision of a data centre to curate unpublished electronic resources or data)
  • costs (a willingness to meet publication fees and data management/sharing costs)

Overview of funders' data policy

The table below summarises the coverage of funders' publication and data policies and the support they provide. The table links to further details for each funder's policy from the DCC. (last updated 10.09.2012)
