What's new - previous updates

June 2019

Panopto was upgraded to the latest version (7.0) on Saturday 22 June 2019. The main changes that affect us are described below.

Changes to Editing

  • The button to implement your changes is now called Apply rather than Publish. This is because 'publish' implies that the video will be made available to students, which is not the case.
  • There is an easier way to make your recordings available to students: from the list of recordings, move your mouse over the recording and click Publish.

  • The Cut and Pointer tools have been merged, making it easier to edit out sections and check the edited version is working as intended. Previously you had to click the scissors to edit but go back to the pointer to test the edited recording. Now you can test the recording without changing tool.

New question type in Quizzes

You can now add a 'fill in the blanks' question in your Panopto quizzes.

  • When looking at the viewing figures for an individual recording, you can now see the completion percentage for each viewer, i.e. how much of the video they watched.

  • Students can download any notes they have made on a recording. Staff can download a transcript of discussions.

June 2018

Panopto was upgraded to the latest version (5.7) on Saturday 9 June 2018. The main changes that affected us were:

New editor features

It is now easier to join separate recordings into one. On the edit screen there is an additional button to add a clip, next to the scissors 'cut' button.
Add clip button

To add another recording into your current one click on the point in the timeline where you would like to insert the clip, and then click on the add a clip button. Use the drop down menu to find the folder containing the recording you want to bring in. Select the recording and click 'Insert'.

Add a new clip dialogue box

The 'advanced editor' which was formerly used to splice recordings together has been retired.

Embed player quizzing

Quizzes can now be played in a browser, if the recording is embedded in an iframe, and can be accessed from either a mobile device or a desktop browser. Prior to this release, quizzes could only be taken in the interactive player, on a desktop PC or Mac.

Threaded discussions

If including a discussion with a recording, it is now possible to reply to specific posts, to create a 'thread' or visual grouping of the comment and its replies.

Stream swap

When two video sources are recorded in the same session, it is now possible to swap the position of primary and secondary video streams when playing them back in the students' view. This currently only works reliably in Chrome. To do this click on the two way arrow in the top right of the video.

December 2017

Panopto will be upgraded to the latest version on Saturday 16 December 2017. The main changes that will affect us are:

  • You will be able to create a playlist of recordings within a Blackboard course. You could use this to collect together recordings on a particular topic and present them in the recommended order. Students can watch the playlist from the Panopto Video area in Blackboard.
  • When re-watching a recording, it will automatically resume at the previous position.
  • Minor improvements to viewing statistics. If you download the statistics for a recording or folder, you will be able to see how people watched the recordings (for example on a mobile or desktop computer).  See the Check viewing figures page for instructions on how to view and download statistics.
  • Support for 360 degree video. You will be able to upload videos captured  by 360 degree cameras and watch them in the Panopto player and VR headsets such as Google Cardboard and Oculus Rift.

September 2017: Handling 2016/17 recordings

The Panopto recordings from 2016/17 have been moved to a subfolder in Panopto and made unavailable to students, to ensure that they aren't visible to new students. Staff can still access these recordings but they are hidden from students.

For modules which have re-sits, this process was carried out between 11 September 2017 and 22 September 2017. Where there were no re-sits, the process started earlier, on 4 September 2017.

If you need to make last year's recordings available to your students, you can do this as follows:

  1. Open your Blackboard course and click on the Panopto Video option in the left-hand menu
  2. Click on the Archive 2016-17 folder to open it
    Archive folder
  3. To make all the recordings in the list available to students:
    1. Click the Settings option in the top right
      Folder settings in Bb
    2. Choose Settings on the left
    3. Choose the option “immediately” under Availability
  4. If you just want to make individual recordings available, you can do this in the usual way: Make available in Blackboard

If you have recordings that need to be moved out of the archive folder and into the main list for reuse, please follow the instructions on the Move a recording help page.

June 2017

The main changes in the new release available from Monday 12 June 2017 are:

  • Embed a YouTube video in your recording
  • Add a Quiz to a recording
  • Improvements to logging in to the manual recorder. In the old version of Panopto you had to click the Sign in with Blackboard button in order to login and make a manual recording. In the new version, the usual Blackboard login screen is displayed automatically without you having to click this button.
  • Record offline without logging in. In this version you can make a manual recording offline, without logging in. However you will need to login in order to upload the recording.
  • Improvements to the light indicators. The light indicators work in the same way as previously (i.e. press to pause and resume a recording) but the software has been improved to make them more reliable.
