Genes and chromosomes

the gene encoded by the DNA.

  • A gene is a sequence of nucleotides that codes for a protein and its associated control sequences.

  • Genes are the basic unit of heredity.
  • Much of genetics is concerned with the role of genes in the production of proteins, the way in which the activity of genes is controlled and regulated, and the way in which genes are passed from generation to generation.
  • In living cells, DNA is found associated with structural proteins in large structures known as chromosomes.
