Laura Morales joined the University of Leicester in May 2011 as a Reader in Comparative Party Politics. Her interests in relation to immigration revolve around the study of (1) the political participation, political representation and social capital of migrant-background citizens, and (2) the political dynamics that emerge around the immigration issue, primarily in connection to public opinion, political parties and policy-making.

Between 2006 and 2009 she coordinated the 6th FP project LOCALMULTIDEM that studied the social and political engagement of migrants in several European cities. Some of the main results of this project were published in 2011 by Palgrave in an edited volume she co-edited with Marco Giugni (University of Geneva), Social Capital, Political Participation and Migration in Europe. Making Multicultural Democracy Work?.

She is currently involved in an 7th FP project on the Support and Opposition to Migration that studies the politicisation of the immigration issue in seven European countries. With other colleagues at Leicester she is leading an application to the ESRC for funding for a project that seeks to study the political representation (descriptive and substantive) of migrant-background populations in several European countries.
