The Virtual Genetics Education Centre (VGEC) provides access to evaluated open educational resources (OERs) in genetics designed for teachers and students in schools and higher education, health professionals and the general public. It covers all aspects of genetics and related topics, from the structure of DNA to the ethical, social and legal implications of developments in this area. The site receives thousands of visits every month from users around the world.

The VGEC includes a range of resources, including tutorials, animations, videos, links to other evaluated resources, and information about local, national and international events. It brings together the outcomes of GENIE's project work, genetics resources from GENIE's National Network, and some of the best existing internet materials.

The resources included in the VGEC – or linked to from the VGEC – have been evaluated by the GENIE CETL. We hope that feedback from users will enable us to develop the site, to ensure that it remain a collection of tested teaching resources for specific teaching objectives and specific audiences.

Comments about the VGEC:

“The cell cycle, mitosis and meiosis - easy-to-understand research material, explained better than most books and sites. Excellent stuff!!!”

“GENIE one in a million. Very good for gifted and talented summer school - allows students to work independently and to input research data for a large number of students.”
Biology Teacher

“Thank you very much for this information. These resources are just what we need.”
Science College Manager

Project Achievements:

The site receives over 20,000 hits a month during term time. It was awarded Third Prize in the 2011 Jorum Learning and Teaching Competition.
