Raising public awareness of genetics

items used in genetics outreach

Raising public awareness of genetics in science and society is an integral part of the GENIE CETL. The Department of Genetics, which houses the GENIE CETL, has a well-established and varied outreach programme.

  • GENIE staff and members of the department take genetics into schools and colleges through talks, DNA practicals ('extracting DNA from bananas') and participation in school science events.
  • The department also regularly organises genetics Taster Courses and Summer Schools - among them a very successful Summer School for Muslim girls in 2005.
  • Members of the department not only bring genetics closer to the young, but also to the wider public through a double-anniversary Open Day organised by the department in 2005, through public talks and lectures, for instance at the British Association events and in Café Scientifique.

In the area of outreach, from key stage 2-3 to Adult Education classes, GENIE is working closely with the University's Widening Participation team, as well as CELS, bioKneX, Chemistry:The Next Generation and many others.

GENIE's Outreach Centre

As part of GENIE's capital development two interconnected laboratories on the second floor of the Maurice Shock Medical Science Building were refurbished in 2006 to high laboratory and audiovisual standards, establishing the GENIE Outreach Centre. This flexible teaching unit is now equipped for use for both 'wet laboratory work' or e-learning activities.

The GENIE Outreach Centre is used for undergraduate teaching as well as outreach activities for schools, colleges and the general public. Since its first use on 14 September 2006, GENIE's first Dynamic DNA event, more than 1500 pupils from schools and colleges have benefited from the GENIE Outreach Centre and other GENIE facilities.
