GENIE News 14th September 2006

GENIE organised Dynamic DNA, an outreach event for Year 9 school children.

dynamic DNA labOn Thursday the 14th of September 2006 the GENIE CETL organised Dynamic DNA, its first major outreach event for Leicestershire school children. Dynamic DNA was a day full of fun and learning for 250 school children and their teachers from seven Leicestershire schools and was a celebration of the completion of the GENIE Outreach Centre. dynamic dna lab - school children in labAll activities on the day were themed around DNA and genetics, and were targeted to key stage 3, year 9. There were light-hearted lectures about DNA in forensic science and the genetics of biological clocks and there were many hands-on activities, like extracting DNA from bananas, solving a crime using a DNA fingerprint, building a DNA model and making a DNA bracelet.

Of course there was also be lots to see, explore and learn... from live animals, plants and mutant fruit flies to fossils and T.rex!

The GENIE CETL would like to thank all volunteers from the Department of Genetics, as well as SciTec, GeoEd, TropicalInc, bioKneX, the BA, Setpoint Leicestershire and Scientific&Chemical for their input to make Dynamic DNA an unforgettable experience for the children.
