Novel Cardiovascular Therapeutic Interventions

Theme Leads: Professor Tony Gershlick, Professor Leong Ng and Professor Andre Ng

We were one of the first groups (Gershlick) to provide proof of principle for the local delivery of therapeutic agents using vascular stents. We have gone on to identify drugs with improved efficacy and safety profiles. Within congenital heart disease, we implanted the first percutaneous atrial septal occluder in 1994. We have been involved in developing various occluder devices and percutaneous valves and continue to collaboration with industry to develop this work.

The rapid translation of these basic studies into the clinic is exemplified by the benchmark pilot trial (ELUTES), led by our UHL/University partnership, which evaluated the safety and efficacy of paclitaxel-eluting stents.

This, and other collaborative studies have laid the foundation for the clinical use of drug-eluting stents. Nonetheless, challenges remain in coronary intervention, such as best treatment of total coronary occlusions and knowing when stented vessels are adequately re-endothelialised (to allow the intensity of anti-platelet therapy to be reduced). Such questions will form a major focus of our translational work under this theme.
