New treatment for stroke set to increase chances of recovery

Posted by rcw15 at Jun 01, 2013 11:00 AM |

Professor Tom Robinson from the Leicester Cardiovascular Biomedical Research Unit is an author on a ground-breaking study published in this month’s The New England Journal of Medicine. In the study, which involved 2839 patients from 144 hospitals across 21 countries, patients who had suffered a stroke involving an acute intracerebral haemorrhage (bleed within the brain) were randomly assigned to receive either standard guideline-recommended treatment, or an intensive rapid blood-pressure lowering protocol.

After 90 days, patients receiving the intensive treatment had significantly fewer complications and reported better quality of life than patients receiving standard treatment. Importantly, the intensive treatment protocol appeared to be as safe as standard treatment and may pave the way to new methods of treating patients with intracerebral haemorrhage in the future.

Details of the press release can be found here.

Open Day Success

Almost 70 members of the public attended the University Hospitals of Leicester public open day on 26th March.

I had no idea how much [cardiovascular] research was going on here in Leicester, I can see why it is seen as a centre of excellence

During the morning an exciting and well-received programme of talks from local researchers was delivered.  In the afternoon delegates enjoyed lunch and spent several hours exploring the research fair, meeting researchers face-to-face to discuss the work they are involved in.

The people of Leicester gave the researchers a very warm welcome, with lots of questions about the work taking place locally. Take a look at our video and images taken at the event.

Our next event is planned for September.
