AeroTraNet is the acronym for:

Unsteady AEROdynamics TRAining NETwork in design methods for competitive and environmentally friendly civil transport aircraft.

AeroTraNet is an Integrated Training Network (ITN) in the European Research Area (ERA) for Early Stage Researchers (ESR) and Established Researchers (ER) within the first 5 years of their career. It is a Marie Curie action of the Framework Programme of the European Commission.
This multi-host initiative brings together the excellent doctoral training schools of ERA research institutes of established international standing, national research centres, and the ERA industry, which provides research training in the workplace.

AeroTraNet brings together the participants’ doctoral training expertise, excellent research facilities, and training in the workplace, to deliver flexible, well-integrated, student-focussed post-graduate and post-doctoral training programmes with a novel European dimension. To ensure a high degree of integration of all doctoral training activities, the participants have chosen one common research topic to be tackled by different investigative methods.
By pooling their training resources, the participants are offering a research training programme that will be a timely and significant improvement to their individual doctoral training activities. The research training programme outcome will be a group of doctors in aeronautics who have learnt to work together in the ERA, have experience of mobility in the ERA and are well equipped to contribute to the future of an integrated European aeronautical industry and academia. This is a tangible contribution to structuring the human resources in the ERA.

AeroTraNet (2006-2010)

Unsteady AEROdynamics TRAining NETwork in airframe components for competitive and environmentally friendly civil transport aircraft.

In 2006-2010, AeroTraNet ran as a multi-host Early Stage research Training (EST) network of the Marie Curie Action of the 6th Framework Programme (see EU website, project page). Supported by a €2.1M grant by the European Commission, AeroTraNet addressed the common research topic of the unsteady flow and noise from aerodynamic cavities. Between 2006 and 2010, 15 Marie Curie EST fellows were trained by AeroTraNet in highly complementary doctoral training programmes.

The unsteady flow and noise were investigated by highly complementary research techniques. Time-dependent numerical simulations of the flow and of the acoustic near-field were performed at the University of Leicester (U. Leicester), wind-tunnel aerodynamic and wall pressure measurements were taken at the ENEA wind tunnel of the Università degli Studi Roma Tre (Uniroma 3), Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) was deployed at the Politecnico di Torino (DIASP) in a water tunnel at a regime of kinematic similarity, and the sensitivity of the flow was investigated by adjoint methods at the Institut de Méchanique des Fluides de Toulouse (IMFT).

AeroTraNet industrial collaborators Airbus (FR), Alstom (UK), and Fiat (IT) were full members of the AeroTraNet management board. Through the advice of the industrial collaborators, AeroTraNet focussed their efforts on studying two classes of cavity flows: A cylindrical cavity representative of the fuel vent from a wide-body civil aircraft on approach (Airbus test case), and a rectangular cavity representative of a bodywork recess on a car (Fiat Research Center test case).

AeroTraNet 2 (2012-2016)

AEROnautical TRAining NETwork in Aerodynamic Noise from Widebody Civil Aircraft

This activity is run as an Integrated Training Network (ITN) of the Marie Curie Actions of the 7th Framework Programme (see EU website, project page). Supported by a €2.8M grant by the European Commission, AeroTraNet 2 addresses the common research topic of shock-associated jet noise for wide-body civil aircraft applications. The predictive tools for modelling the unsteady jet aerodynamics and noise are investigated by knowledge management and knowledge capturing techniques, to identify which element of the modelling process is likely to give the greatest overall prediction improvement by further work. This process is designed to be exploitable also in the design of engines for power. This programme trains nine Early Stage Researchers and two Established Researchers in an integrated framework. The novelty of this activity is that the jet noise research by the ESRs becomes itself object of investigation for knowledge management and capturing by other ESRs in the same network.

Shock-associated jet noise test cases proposed by industrial partner Airbus (FR) are investigated by shock-tolerant numerical modelling for under-expanded jets at the University of Leicester (U.Leicester), large eddy simulations for turbulent jets with weak shocks at the Centre Europeeen de Recherche et de Formation Avancee en Calcul Scientifique (Cerfacs), advanced flow-noise correlations at the Università degli Studi Roma Tre (Uniroma 3), jet and near-field noise experiments at the Von Karman Institute (VKI), reduced-order modelling and flow control at the Institut de Méchanique des Fluides de Toulouse (IMFT-INP), and advanced laser-based measurement techniques at the Italian Ship Model Basin (CNR-INSEAN). Knowledge output is synthesized through a dedicated knowledge capturing programme by the University of Greenwich (UoG), which is used by private sector partner Alstom UK.

By combining their well-established doctoral training schools and graduate training programmes, the academic and industrial partners train a well-integrated team of nine ESR and two ER who have learnt to combine their different research techniques to push forward the state of the art of shock cell noise prediction applied to aircraft design. This is a significant progress in structuring the European research training capacity in aerodynamics, noise, and knowledge capturing, for EU's knowledge based economy.

Marie Curie Host Fellowships for Early Stage Researchers (ESR) and Established Researchers (ER)

Marie Curie ESR and ER actions are aimed at offering structured scientific and/or technological training as well as providing complementary skills. The training focuses on developing S&T techniques, but it can also include more practical skills such as research management and languages. The idea is to encourage participants to take up long-term research careers by helping them to enhance their job prospects.
