Under 5 years' old

If you have a child who is under 5 years of age, you may want to consider nursery care. Nurseries provide early education and social interaction for children, but they are not compulsory. In Leicester there are a variety of nurseries including ones attached to a school and private nurseries.

Day Nurseries

Day nurseries provide care and education of children aged from 6 weeks to 5 years old. Most offer full or part-time care and may be private, community or council run.

Nursery Schools and Classes

These may be run in schools or privately and are usually for children aged 3-5 years old.

There are also other options for childcare in the UK. These include childminders and home-based childcarers, which can be more flexible if you need childcare for weekends and evenings.

Some parents choose to employ a 'childminder' who usually looks after a few children (up to 6 children under 8 years old) usually in the childminder's own home.

They are inspected by the UK Government.

Home-Based Childcarers

These are people employed in your home to look after children. They may live with you and tend to work at flexible hours. They are not necessarily inspected.

For more information about all of these options or to help decide which is best for you, you can visit the Children's Information Service in Leicester.
