Biometric Residence Permit

Collecting a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) for a successful overseas visa application

30-day Entry Clearance Vignette

If you successfully submit a Tier 4 visa application overseas your passport will be returned with a 30 day entry-clearance vignette (visa sticker). This visa will enable you to enter the UK to collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) before you begin your studies.

When can I travel to the UK

You must enter the UK within the 30-day validity of your vignette to ensure your Tier 4 visa is valid. If you enter before the start date on your visa you will usually have to leave the UK and re-enter whilst it is valid. if you try and travel after the expiry date on your BRP you will not be permitted to travel and you will need to make a new application for entry clearance.

Choosing where to collect your BRP

When you apply for your Tier 4 student visa you will be asked to specify a collection point for your BRP. We are able to offer BRP collection on our campus for you and any Tier 4 dependents on your visa. This will be quicker and easier than collecting your documents from a Post Office.

To ensure your BRP is delivered to us for collection, please enter the code: 2HE539 in the 'Alternative Location' field in the BRP Collection Page on Visa4UK website.

The delivery address you should chose is: University of Leicester, FAO: M Gibbs-Jones SIAC, Crush Hall, Fielding Johnson Building, University Road, Leicester, UK, LE1 7RH.

When you should collect your BRP

You must collect your BRP, and the BRPs of any dependants, within 10 days of arriving in the UK. If you fail to do this you may be subject to a financial penalty, reduction or cancellation of your leave.

The documents you need to collect your BRP

To collect your BRP you will need;

  • the passport(s)/travel document(s) which contain the 30 day visa AND
  • the grant letter you were provided with by the UKVI overseas.

The main applicant can collect the BRPs for any dependants by presenting the relevant passports or travel documents.

What to do if you lose your decision/grant letter

If you have arranged to collect your BRP from a Post Office and you  have lost your decision letter and do not know which Post Office to go to, you must e-mail and provide them with the following details:

• your full name;
• your date of birth;
• your nationality;
• your passport number;
• a contact telephone number.

You'll need to collect your BRP within 10 days of arriving in the UK. You can read about the BRP here:

Checking your BRP

When you collect your BRP make sure your personal details such as your name and DOB are correct. The BRP should cover the full length of your degree course an provide you with some additional (wrap-up ) time in the UK. Check the expiry date is correct and let us know as soon as possible if you think an error has been made.
