Where to Live?

Your living accommodations should be within a reasonable walk to the University, if not then transportation will have to be taken into consideration (i.e. bus pass, walking, driving).

The following areas surround the University of Leicester.

CLARENDON PARK / KNIGHTON
  • Where is it?
Victoria Park Road to the north, A563 to the south, Welford Road to the east and London Road to the west.
  • Distance from uni
    2-10 min walk

  • Distance from town
    15-20 min walk

  • Shops/amenities
lots of supermarkets, greengrocers, specialist shops, takeaways, restaurants and off licences, mostly on Queens road and Welford Road. Co-op and launderette on Clarendon Park Road.

  • Bus Routes
    80, 27, 28, 44 (Queens Road),42, 43, 49 48 (Welford Road).

One of the more upmarket student areas but still affordable.

Most properties are terraces with small gardens for 3-4 students.

Quite busy in the evening advisable not to go out alone at night. There have been a number of complaints from local residents about noise and behaviour of students in this area - so if you’re going to be throwing parties and making lots of noise you will probably have the greatest resistance from neighbours living here.

This is a pleasant, quiet and upmarket area of Leicester, with easy access to both the city centre and Oadby where there are very good shopping facilities, a leisure complex and a large public swimming pool. It is also probably the most expensive of the popular student residential areas.  Houses to let are generally semi-detached with attractive gardens.

NORTH EVINGTON / EVINGTON
  • Where is it?
East Park Road /St. Barnabas Road to the west, City boundry to the east,  Uppingham Road to the north and  Kimberley Road to the south.

  • Distance from town: 10-15 min walk

  • Shops/amenities: 24 hour Spar, takeaways, launderettes, Co-op, many specialist ethnic food shops, Indian, restaurants, off licences, mainly on Evington Road.  There is also the Majid Umar (Evington Muslim Centre).

  • Bus Routes: 22, 36, 54A and 54.

Evington is perhaps the most traditional student area of Leicester with properties cheaper than in Clarendon Park.  One advantage of living in Evington is the 24 hour Spar supermarket, which as the name suggests, never closes. Evington is one of Leicester’s major Asian areas so if you’re interested in cooking there are a number of shops you can get more unusual ingredients from.
