Hardship Fund

Help for Housing

The University has extended its 20/21 Hardship Fund allocation to include financial assistance to help students pay rent who are residing in private accommodation.

The award will be a contribution towards private accommodation costs, in light of the ongoing financial pressures placed upon students as a result of the current lockdown restrictions due to the global pandemic. This funding has been made possible due to extra government support specifically provided to ease the problems caused by the pandemic and will be an exceptional one – off award.

The Welfare Service have established an eligibility process to prioritise students identified in most need and to target students who have not previously been assisted by the existing Hardship Funds 2020/21:

Help for Housing eligibility:

  • International students should continue to apply for IHF from which support for rent and living costs as a whole will be considered in line with HFH and COVID rent allowance.
  • Home/EU student status – registered as current, on campus based full-time programme of study.
  • Students must have a household income under £60,000 as assessed by Student Finance or otherwise evidenced if PGT or PGR.
  • Students must reside in private accommodation and hold a tenancy agreement
  • Students in university accommodation who are on exempt courses.
  • Student must not have received £500+ (excluding IT Fund) from the Hardship Fund previously in AY 20/21.

Specific funds have been made available by the University and through the generosity of our alumni and donors through philanthropy to support students who are experiencing financial hardship due to the impact of COVID-19.

As part of the Covid Hardship Fund, funds have been allocated specifically to support you in accessing essential IT equipment if you have been impacted by the pandemic. Please note, this is a limited allocated fund.
