Learn to Program via Python


Course description


This course will introduce you to how programming works, the basic concepts and how to write your first script.

Learning how to program can help you to speed up your research by automating simple repetitive tasks so you don’t have to do them by hand. This course will teach you the basics of how to do this using the easy to learn, yet powerful, programming language Python.

What can I expect to cover?

The course will cover the basic programming concepts and how these are used in Python. Attendees will learn about different data types, how variables work and how to run functions and methods. We’ll also discuss some of the python packages most commonly used in research.

What will I get out of this course?

By the end of this course, participants will be able to write basic scripts for automating repetitive tasks in Python.  They will also leave with knowledge on how and where to find extra information on programming topics of interest.

Who is it for?

Researchers with no prior programming experience, who are interested in using programming to accelerate and/or improve their work.

Participant preparation needed?

Before the course, participant preparation

During the training workshop we will be using Anaconda3 on the Windows 10 desktops, so no preparation is needed.

If you are bringing your own laptop, please download and  install Anaconda3 (https://www.anaconda.com/distribution/) before arriving.
