Wednesday 25th April 2018 was a historic day for the University of Leicester and Team Leicester Sport. The men’s Futsal team, captained by Alex Murphy and coached by Nimesh Patel are the first Team Leicester team to win a BUCS Sport Trophy Final.

Matthew Weir, Head of Sport & Active Life commenting on the team success:
“The team’s success in the Trophy final yesterday afternoon has been due to the dedication of the students and coaching staff. Team Leicester continues to strive for new heights and this is a real statement of what can be achieved through focus and hard work”

Yesterday’s final was the culmination of a very challenging journey for the team. Throughout all of the rounds, the team have continually been challenged, being drawn to play against teams from higher ranked sporting institutions. In the last 32 they travelled and beat Edinburgh University; the last 16 we hosted Manchester Met, quarter finals away at University of Sheffield, semi-finals away at Northumbria University and the University of Bath in the final.

Yesterday’s final saw Bath control the possession in the early stages. Leicester’s Kyle O’Connor struck twice in quick succession against the run of play, with Leicester holding the lead into half time.
The second half Bath began the second period in a similar fashion to the first, controlling the majority of the possession, but Leicester defended resolutely to keep themselves in front.
Bath’s pressure finally paid dividends scoring two quick goals to draw level.
In a frantic few minutes, Bath scored to take the lead for the first time, quickly followed by an equaliser from Leicester’s Jeffrey Adubofour in the final minutes of the match, taking the match into penalties.
During the penalties credit must go to Leicester goal keeper, Joel Rivers who continually denied Bath the opportunity to score, leaving Alex Murphy the opportunity to win the final for Leicester. Alex successfully converted his spot kick and sealed University of Leicester’s first BUCS Futsal Trophy victory in their first appearance.

Following the final, Coach, Nimesh Patel commented:

“It was the perfect way to win a final, coming from behind in the dying seconds to equalize and take the game to penalties showed great resilience from the players, I’m so proud of what they have achieved”

“Travelling up and down the country throughout the competition gave us the opportunity to become closer as a team, creating friendships to last a life-time. These memories will stay with me forever”.

“On a personal note, to progress my game understanding and knowledge has been an on-going process, coming up against highly qualified and experienced futsal coaches and beating them, has given me great pride in knowing i am on the right path to continue being successful”.

Reflecting on this first win for a Team Leicester sporting team in a BUCS Sport Trophy final, Steve Bayley, Sport Experience officer (performance) commented: “Yesterdays win demonstrates that hard work and dedication has resulted in a number of Team Leicester sports teams challenging and achieving success against teams from higher ranked sporting institutions. Moving forwards we will be using yesterday’s success to inspire and demonstrate to our Team Leicester teams that success is achievable at every level of competition”
