Learn about our Sports Scholarship programme

For the 2016/17 academic year 24 student athletes have been accepted onto the University’s Sports Scholarship programme. The University is committed to sporting excellence and strives to provide support for students to achieve their full sporting potential.

With an extraordinarily high standard of athletes applying for this year the programme has reached new levels of ability. The growing success of the programme can clearly be seen this year with many of the athletes aiming for GB trials, international competitions and some working towards European and World championships next year.

This year sees our athletes competing in 17 different sports and studying 19 different courses, the most diverse cohort to date to benefit from the programme. This demonstrates the wide variety of sport on offer at the University; reinforcing the University’s ‘Sport for All’ message.

The sports scholarship scheme is made possible thanks to the generous donations from our University’s alumni to the Leicester Student Opportunities Fund. This year, alumni support will enable 3 Platinum Scholars, 9 Gold Scholars and 12 Silver Scholars to continue to pursue their sporting aspirations alongside studying at a world class institution. Not only will this allow our students to continue their sporting development, but also further their academic experience as they prepare for life after University.

The programme will offer support through mentoring with alumna, Danielle Brown, along with physiological guidance, access to facilities and some financial support Gold and Platinum scholars.

“It has been great to see so many talented students on the programme this year from a wide range of sports and courses. I look forward to hearing the several stories of success from the student-athletes and wish them the best of luck this year”. - Matt Weir, Head of Sport & Recreation
