Tim Devenport to Captain the 2018 England Student 5 Nations Men’s Fencing Team

Congratulations to University of Leicester Fencing team member, Tim Devenport on being selected to compete and captain the England team at the student 5 nations. The competition is taking place on the 14th July at the Gryphon Sports Centre in Leeds.

Tim will compete for England as part of the Epee team, with fellow Team Leicester teammates, Ben Hart and Aidan Michaels competing in the Sabre and Ben Shepard in the Foil.

This season the men’s university team have continued to deliver success in the BUCS, Regional and International competitions. The 1st team finished 3rd overall in the BUCS premier league with coach, Andrew Basford winning the University of Leicester coach of the year award at the recent University Sports Awards.

Outside of inter-university BUCS competitions, Benjamin Hart won gold at the East Midlands Regional Championships in the Sabre discipline, with teammate, Benjamin Shepherd winning silver. Benjamin Shepard continued the podium success at the East Midlands regionals, winning bronze in the Foil. Following their success both Ben’s were selected to represent the East Midlands Region at the GB Cup (Sabre).

Following the East Midlands Regional Championships, Benjamin Shepard won the Foil competition at the Wellington Open.
Timothy Devenport won bronze at both the Leicester Open and East Midlands Regional Championships in the Epee discipline. Following this, Tim was informed of his selection to be Men's Captain for England for this year’s Student 5 Nations and represent the region at the Winton Cup (National inter-regional team championships)

As part of the Fencing teams continuous athlete professional development programme, Daithi Harkin (Sabre) Benjamin Shepard (Foil) and Kieran Patrick (Foil) all completed their British Fencing level 2 coaching qualifications. The course organised and ran by the university coaching staff in conjunction with British Fencing and Leicester Academy on the following weekends, 5th/6th & 26th/27th May at the University of Leicester.

In addition to this, at the GB Cup finals Benjamin Hart won Silver in the Sabre, loosing out to a 2009 Alumni Daniel Redshaw in the final. Ben Shepherd finished 11th out of 21 also in the Men's sabre. Rukia Hill on the women's team qualified for the women's sabre through the eastern region, and finished 7th out of 20.
