The University of Leicester’s Women’s Rugby Union team are gearing up for yet another BUCS campaign. The 2015/16 season started with mixed results with our girls fighting it out at the top regional level in the BUCS Midlands 1A league. However seemingly inspired by some Christmas cheer the team rallied together to go on an unbeaten run throughout all of December. Upon returning from the Christmas break the team kept the momentum going, with hard work on the training ground they were able to carry on their unbeaten streak right up to the end of the season. Finishing their BUCS campaign with an emphatic 68-7 win over Oxford Brookes 1st’s who had narrowly bested them earlier in the year.

But the hard work didn’t stop there. Varsity season was fast approaching and the Women’s Rugby Union team would be playing on the biggest stage around, the Welford Road stadium home to the Leicester Tigers. After weeks of rigorous training the girls were dismayed to discover on the day of the game the event had been cancelled and rearranged to a later date after what could only be described as a biblical amount of rainfall. Despite their university work commitments it was far from rare to see our girls preparing in the searing sun on Victoria Park. All their hard work and dedication was dully rewarded with an immense 53-0 win over local rivals DMU.

We ran some questions by Club Captain Cate Ashley ahead of the Women’s Rugby Club’s new season and she tackled them for us.

Who are you?
I'm Cate Ashley I'm the Club Captain of Women's Rugby Union.

How has university sport improved your university experience as a whole?
University sport has definitely improved my university experience. Being part of such a close knit team has just made life a whole lot easier. When you're struggling with your course or annoyed by housemates these teammates are your second family. People forget that studying is stressful and you need an outlet and being part of a sports team and competing is definitely one of the best ways to let go of life’s little worries.

What is your favourite memory from your time being part of Team Leicester?
My favourite memory has to be winning our 13th varsity match last year. It was an unbelievable feeling when the final whistle blew not just for the club and the team but the thousands of people who had turned up to support us. Being part of that moment is going to be something I will never forget.

What would you say to someone who is unsure of joining Team Leicester?
I would say not to be unsure. Being part of a team is being part of a family. You will make friends for life and feel like you have such a good support system while at university. We train together, play together and party together!

In one sentence why should someone join your club?
You should join ULWRFC because it will be the best decision of your university life!
