Club Captain James Owen tells us all about the Tennis Club and his ‘scorching backhand’.

Fresh off a summer of watching Andy Murray winning his second Wimbledon championship and a gold medal at the Olympics in Rio our tennis club are eagerly awaiting the new season. Our Men’s 1st and 2nd teams compete in BUCS Midlands Leagues 2A and 3B respectively, whilst our Women’s 1st team compete in BUCS Midlands League 2A. As part of the club you will also be given the chance to compete in singles and doubles county leagues, tournaments and events so there is no lack of playing time. This year the Men’s 2nd team have an added incentive with local rivals DMU in their league, and with the Men’s teams coming out 5-1 winners at last year’s Varsity it’s sure to be a real contest.

The club has a fully qualified coach so whether you’re a total beginner or the long lost Williams sister there is no reason not to give it a go. With an active social scene you’ll be sure to make a load of new friends with pub-crawls, paintballing, and even day trips to Wimbledon make the list of group activities at the club.

We served up Club Captain James Owen some questions about the Tennis Club and he aced the responses.

Who are you?

My name is James and I am the Club Captain for the Tennis Club.

How has university sport improved your university experience as a whole?

Joining the tennis club has improved my uni experience massively. It allowed me to be integrated into uni almost instantly, and not only did I become friends with a lot of intelligent and diverse individuals, I was able to ask those in the years above for help and advice whenever needed.

What is your favourite memory from your time being part of Team Leicester?

My favourite memory from my time at team Leicester has to be varsity in my first year. I was playing doubles for the 2nd team and hit an absolute scorching backhand down the line to win the first point of the match. I got a little over excited though and successfully lost us the match 2 sets to 1. But overall it was a fantastic experience, and having the rest of team Leicester cheering my partner and I on all the way was the best feeling in the world.

What would you say to someone who is unsure of joining Team Leicester?

Unsure about joining Team Leicester? Just do it! You really don't know what you're missing until you've joined. From the intense matches, to having a reliable (slightly dysfunctional) family that have your back, to creating memories and stories that will stay in your mind for the rest of your life. There couldn't possibly be a reason why you wouldn't want to.

In one sentence why should someone join your club?

Whether it be to become the next Andy Murray with the help of our professional coaches or to meet new people and enjoy the social aspect of uni, UoL tennis is the club for you.

If you’re interested in trying out our Tennis Club be sure to find them at Fresher’s Fair 2016 in Queens Hall, located in the Percy Gee Building. Alternatively get in contact with them via their Facebook page ‘UoL Tennis’ or their Twitter ‘@UoLTennis’.
