Find out why Women's Football have won the first ever Team Leicester Club of the Month award!

An idea formulated as part of Sports Officer Rasteen Riyahi-Boni's manifesto the Team Leicester Club of the Month award has been introduced for the 2016/17 academic year. The Sport & Recreation service have teamed up with kit supplier Canterbury to provide a £100 kit voucher for each month's winning club to spend however they choose. Designed to encourage increased levels of performance, commitment and a tenacity to go the extra-mile; the competition allows clubs to develop their presence not only within the University but also in the local community.

The winner of the first ever Team Leicester Club of the Month was awarded to the Women's Football Club for their efforts throughout October 2016. The club have managed to secure their highest ever membership count which can partly be put down to the successful creation of their very own 2nd XI who entered into BUCS this year. Usually a new team might take some time to find their feet; however the team remain unbeaten and even stuck 9 goals past Aston in a 12 goal thriller. The first team have clearly been practising shooting in the last few weeks scoring 39 goals in just two games, a 22-1 thrashing of Warwick was followed by a 17-0 annihilation of Derby.

Away from the pitch the girls have also been putting in some hard work to ensure their club continues to develop. They kicked off the year by securing a kit sponsorship deal with 'Extravaganza Promotional Merchandise', additionally they also tripled their sponsorship with The Counting House pub in Leicester where they host their socials. Furthermore the team wholeheartedly threw themselves into the recent Pride Week at the University, sporting rainbow laces in their matches and joining in with the Pride March. The club also attended many of the BUCS Girl's Football Week sessions, organised by club member and University of Leicester Football Activator Lucy Chambers, in an attempt to raise the profile of women's football at the University.

The commitment of the club both on and off the field has certainly set the bar for other clubs as they strive to secure their own Team Leicester Club of the Month award over the coming months.
