Find out why the Women's Hockey Club have been named November Club of the Month!

An idea formulated as part of Sports Officer Rasteen Riyahi-Boni's manifesto the Team Leicester Club of the Month award has been introduced for the 2016/17 academic year. The Sport & Recreation service have teamed up with kit supplier Canterbury to provide a £100 kit voucher for each month's winning club to spend however they choose. Designed to encourage increased levels of performance, commitment and a tenacity to go the extra-mile; the competition allows clubs to develop their presence not only within the University but also in the local community.

The winner of the Team Leicester November Club of the Month was awarded to the Women’s Hockey Club. The ladies have clearly been putting some work into their study lately as they managed to win first prize at the PWC quiz, and in the process earned a massive £1000 for their club. The club are currently planning on using this money to benefit their club, and others, for years to come by purchasing dugouts for the astro-turf. However, this is not the only work that the club have been doing away from the pitch. The club have continuously thrown themselves into supporting charities and initiatives, starting with both the University Pride Week and HeforShe. Furthermore the club has been supporting Operation Christmas Child in their shoebox campaign, a noble cause which all of the clubs teams involved themselves in. Finally, in conjunction with both the Men’s and Mixed hockey clubs the ladies helped to raise over £500 at their annual fundraiser event, this will only go to further the club’s development and relationships between the trio of hockey clubs at the University.

Despite all this extra work away from the field the ladies have not forgotten about the performance aspect of the club. They have made steps to improve performance through the introduction of a 'gym buddy' scheme, whereby members across all three teams are paired up and encouraged to keep fit. Even this far into the season the first team remain undefeated are looking to push for promotion from their league. Impressively they have also reached the quarter-finals of the cup after convincing wins over Nottingham and East Anglia. The club’s second and third team have also shown signs of improvement over recent weeks and will be looking to improve even further in 2017. The club have also adhered to the errant popularity of hockey at the University, in recent weeks they have successfully fielded four teams in local leagues with ease and are looking to continue to do so. Not only does this grant new players the opportunity to be involved with the club, but it also ensures that these players can develop and potentially push for places in the BUCS squads.

The club’s dedication to both their performance and involvement with outreach campaigns has certainly demonstrated their willingness to go the extra-mile, and thus they have rightfully earned the November Club of the Month award.
