Josh has captained the University Men’s Rugby Union 1st XV this year in what has been an incredible season. The team successfully completed an unbeaten league season with Josh featuring in all bar two matches. Furthermore, the team reached the quarter finals of the BUCS Trophy with Josh playing in every match along the way. Josh also captained the side in this year’s dramatic Varsity match against DMU, Leicester eventually coming out winners and Josh claiming his third Varsity victory in a row. Finally, Josh played a key role in the success of the University team at the BUCS 7s tournament, playing every game as the squad reached the quarter finals. Josh also undertook his RFU Coaching Level 1 course this year, adding to his personal development and providing him with another route into sport. All of Josh's achievements on and off the pitch led to him being awarded the Sports Personality of the Year for 2017, and he was also shortlisted for the President and Vice-Chancellor's Student of the Year award.

Josh has ensured he has made the most of the opportunities his scholarship provides this year:

‘I use the gyms, Roger Bettles and Danielle Brown, 4/5 times a week minimum, in addition to rugby training sessions and matches 3 times a week. This has developed both my strength, achieving a heavier weight programme which correlates to greater physical ability on the pitch, and conditioning, which has prevented me from suffering any long-term injuries that would inhibit my contribution through the season.
I also use the physiotherapist and sports massages, this has helped me to manage various minor injuries sustained throughout the season, such as a pulled quad, turf toe, shoulder damage etc.’

Think you have what it takes to become of the University’s elite sports scholars? Find out more about our programme here. All applications must be submitted by 5pm 29th August 2017.
