Has the reason behind the Men's Rugby Union 1XV's success been revealed?

Results from a recent NatWest survey may have exposed the reason behind the University of Leicester Rugby Union 1st team’s current form. The Student Living Index surveyed 2500 students across 25 of the country’s most popular universities in an attempt to discover how students spent their time at university. The survey revealed that students in Leicester spend around two hours longer on average playing rugby per week than the average student. In fact, Leicester students rank 3rd in the country for time spent playing the sport, arguably explaining both the Men’s and Women’s Rugby Union teams victories over rivals De Montfort at Welford Road at Varsity in 2016.

This increased dedication to the sport could be a factor in the University Rugby Union 1st team’s recent successes. Six games into the new BUCS season the boys from UoLRFC find themselves top of their Midlands 1A league having not lost a single match. Furthermore, the team have also just progressed to the last-16 of the BUCS Rugby Union Cup. After a 36-7 demolition of Lancaster 1st the squad travelled north and over the border into Scotland to face Strathclyde 1st.

With Strathclyde sitting in a comfortable mid-table position in the North B league, a division above our team, and an arduous journey to the game a win for Leicester looked to be a real challenge. Yet, even with all these factors against them, the team rallied together and claimed a 20-7 victory over the hosts and secured their place in the next round. With a tough match lined up against Sheffield 1st in February we hope those extra-hours spent playing rugby will pay off as the team look to claim another big win for the University and Team Leicester.

We spoke to Sam Cranswick, Club Captain of the University of Leicester Men's Rugby Union Club, to get his insight on the club’s success this year:

‘The main thing I have to say is that our recent run of form is testament to the dedication shown by the players this season throughout the club. This has been evident through the positive engagement to learning our new system of play, but also the increased competition for places has provided an extra incentive to take your chances in every training session and game. The First XV are currently unbeaten and so in theory the Treble is on the cards (of Varsity, the BUCS Trophy and the League), however we don't want to get too ahead of ourselves just yet. The main goal is promotion and maintaining our unbeaten streak. The 2nds and 3rds are both very much in the mix to be competing for their respective league titles at the end of the season and so as a club, it would great to get our hands on some silverware and promotions too, as well as ensuring a trio of big wins in Varsity season too!’

We wish all the boys the best of luck with the rest of the season, and hope to see an emphatic victory in this year’s Varsity match to equal last year’s performance!
