Leicester University Sports Scholar and first year student, Jasmine Latham recently received congratulatory news informing her that she was successful in securing a place on the England U21 Nets Netball player long list for the 2019 World Cup.

The selected players will commence training next month as a squad for the World Indoor Netball Association, World Cup due to take place in South Africa, Autumn 2019.

Commenting on her selection:

Jasmine said “I am really excited about my selection and for another opportunity to represent my country in the sport I love. I’m looking forward to training with the squad and hopefully achieving another English Indoor Nets gold medal. I’d like to thank everyone at ULNC, especially Liz Jennings, for their ongoing support and belief in me”

Nets is a variation of netball that is fast, non-stop and very tactical. Although there are similarities with the rules of standard 7 a side netball, there are obviously a number of differences as well. The most obvious of these is that the game is played within an enclosed high tension cage, or ‘nets’

Liz Jennings, University of Leicester, Netball Head Coach commented:
“Since her arrival at Leicester last September, Jasmine has demonstrated the attitude, desire and qualities needed for athletes who wish to achieve International representations. Moving forward, I will sit down with Jasmine to discuss the areas needed to further develop her game so that she has every opportunity to make the final selected team who compete at next year’s World Cup”

Jasmine has previously been selected to represent England under-18 at the World Indoor  Championships in Brisbane, Australia in October 2015. In May 2018, Jasmine will initially start attending monthly training sessions with the other successful long list athletes. When official competition dates are confirmed the number of training sessions will increase allowing coaches and selectors time to assess all long list athletes, before final selections of an official touring squad of 12 players for the World Cup in 2019 are selected and announced.
