Find out about some of the successes the University's sports clubs have reaped already this year!

Team Leicester logo As the first semester of the 2016/17 academic year comes to a close we took some time to look back and reflect on what has been an incredibly successful start for the University’s sports teams, Team Leicester.

One of the first achievements to note is the substantial growth of Team Leicester in the early months of this academic year. At the end of the 2015/16 academic year Team Leicester’s membership numbers stood at an impressive 1826 students, making up roughly 1/3 of the student body on campus. Incredibly however this figure has already been surpassed, with current membership numbers standing at 1966, excluding the University’s 24 Sports Scholars. This progression reflects the hard work of the Sport & Recreation service who took on more events during the Welcome Weeks than ever before. Additionally, this achievement could never have come about if it were not for the exceptional work put in by all of our 37 Team Leicester clubs over this semester. With clubs advertising over their own media channels over the summer, and engaging with thousands of students over the opening weeks of the semester they are the driving force behind this accomplishment. The aim for Team Leicester now is to push on and look to attain 2000 active members by the end of the academic year, cementing Team Leicester’s place as the largest sporting community at the University.

The growth of Team Leicester can clearly be correlated to the improved sporting success in BUCS so far this semester. Last year the University finished 46th in BUCS, the University’s highest ever placing and the second successive year of a top 50 finish. Despite the gargantuan challenge facing our students, with the huge investment into sport made by other universities in the region, our clubs have exceeded expectations so far and currently we sit 37th in the BUCS tables. Thus far Team Leicester has amassed 734 BUCS points, considering last year we finished with 779.5 points it is reasonable to expect our clubs to surpass this mark and possibly secure another record breaking table finish for the University.

This immense achievement would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of all of our clubs. All of our Team Leicester community give up their free time in order to represent the University, without them all we would be nowhere. There have been some particularly notable performances so far this year, platinum Sports Scholar Ryan Hunt won the BUCS Wild Water Racing Canoeing. Silver Sports Scholar Leanne Herbert won BUCS B plate for Squash; whilst George Lovatt won the F plate category. Men’s Rugby Union 1st have reached the last 16 of the BUCS Rugby Union Trophy and remain unbeaten in their Midlands 1A league, all but securing their promotion to the Northern Premier League next season. Both Men’s Basketball teams and the Women’s Basketball team have all reached the quarter-finals of their respective cups. Several of our teams also look set to secure promotion in their leagues, including Men’s Lacrosse 1st, Men’s Football 4th, Netball 4th and Women’s Football 1st. With so much success already this year we hope that the hard work of our clubs is rewarded even further in 2017, both in BUCS and in the annual Varsity against local rivals DeMontfort University.
