Double GB success for sports scholars!

Sports scholars Ryan Hunt and Nick Cummins have both enjoyed call ups to the GB team in recent weeks.

Ryan Hunt - Sports Scholar Ryan Hunt, platinum sports scholar, was successfully called up to the GB Wild Water team for the upcoming 2017 World Championships. Ryan will be representing the GB team in the Men’s C1 competition as part of the championships, as well as pairing up with Mike Rees-Clark for Men’s C2. Ryan and the team will head to Pau, France in September hoping to bring back gold for Great Britain!

Meanwhile, Nick Cummins has been competing internationally over the past week as part of the GB Wheelchair Rugby team. Nick was called up to the team for the recent European Championships in Koblenz, Germany. The team made light work of the group stages, comfortably beating Poland, Ireland and Denmark on the way to the semi-final which saw a high scoring game against France. The final saw a repeat of the 2015 final, with Great Britain coming up against Sweden. With the game tied 25-25 at half time nobody could have called the result. However, Great Britain managed to surpass their rivals and came out 49-41 winners. Nick will now be able to return from the tournament victorious, congratulations from everyone here at Leicester!

The success of these two athletes pays homage to the University’s excellent sports scholarship programme. Since its creation the programme has enabled elite athletes to develop and thrive whilst studying at the University, with these successes being the latest in a substantial list.
