Staff and Students a like come together to raise money for a variety of charities by taking on the Leicester Marathon on Sunday 15th October.

On Sunday 15th October, University of Leicester staff and students gathered at Victoria Park to take on the Leicester Marathon. As the sun started to shine over the park the 12 University of Leicester staff and students united to take part in the annual University’s Cummins Relay Challenge equipped with their University of Leicester t-shirts provided by the Sport & Active Life service.

University of Leicester - Cummins Relay

The University of Leicester students and staff helped to raise over £1200 for LOROS with their Cummins Relay Challenge entry fees alone. Hopefully this total can be beaten next year with even more teams being entered.

The relay began, and the teams got the day underway with their respective first leg runners darting off in high spirits. An hour and 45 minutes later the first University of Leicester representative could be spotted in the distance. The gruelling New Walk incline couldn’t stop ‘Team 3, Leicester Law’ who raced home to finish in 6th place. A mere 2 minutes behind were the duo of Marie Muir (Senior Project Manager: Student Communication & Engagement; Student Experience) and Jenna Morgan (Agile Coach and Scrum Master; IT) finishing in 7th. 10th place went to another Law School team ‘Team 2, Leicester Law’ meaning 3 out of top 10 were made up of University of Leicester teams.

The University team’s continued to cross the finish line with the Chemistry and Sport & Active Life teams next in, the two Team Leicester Ladies Hockey Club teams crossed the finish line hand in hand claiming joint 19th place. Teams from Research and Enterprise, The Law School and the team led by Penny Jackson (Director of Operations, College of Science and Engineering) rounded up the finishers for the Cummins Leicester Half Relay Challenge.

Only one of our University of Leicester teams were brave enough to take on the Cummins Leicester Full Marathon Challenge with the Team Code-Blooded from the Informatics Department crossing the line in 3:30:59 finishing in 5th place.

The teams may have not won the foot race, but ‘Scrambled Legs’ organised by Haf Rees in the Research Support Services managed to take home the coveted best team photo.

Whilst Sport & Active Life helped promote and organise team entries to the Cummins Relay Challenge it was also their sports clubs who got into the spirit, with many Team Leicester Clubs being represented on the day. Most noticeably were Men’s Rugby Union as 13 members donned their Get Busy Living Vests provided by the Matt Hampson Foundation (pictured below) to raise £1022.

The Netball Club also saw two of their members take on the gruelling half marathon with Bethan Malyn and Eva Klesnik-Edwards running for SANE Mental Health Charity and Guide Dogs Charity respectively, raising over £1000 for their causes. The Team Leicester representation didn’t stop there as Lacrosse, Cricket and of course the Running and Athletics Club got involved as 7 members took on the half marathon and a further member completed the full marathon.

With over £3,000 raised for various charities we would like to say.. Well done to all University of Leicester Staff and Students involved, especially the Team Leicester cohort.
