The University of Leicester had a successful funding festive period with both the Sport & Active Life department and the University of Leicester Boat Club being successful with funding bids.

BUCS - Inactive Females.

The University of Leicester are now 1 of 18 universities who have been successful in receiving BUCS Active funding linked to projects tackling inactive female students. The Sport & Active Life department will receive just under £7,000 to provide new and exciting opportunities for females to get involved in physical activity. Collectively these 18 universities will be receiving £160,000 to support activity aimed at targeting over 5,400 new student participants.

Head of Sport & Active Life Matt Weir said “With 49 institutions across England applying for funding it is fantastic that the Sport & Active Life department have been successful with our application which will help to target female participation through a variety of interventions”.

We hope that the money can be used to increase the amount of inactive females currently taking part in physical activity, the focus of the intervention will be through Faith Groups, Learn to Lift Sessions and Female Only Physical Activity sessions such as gym, Zumba etc.

The project will be starting in early February, if you have any suggestions or questions please email Lewis Jones – Sport Experience Officer (Participation) – lcj11@le.ac.uk

Sport England Small Grants Fund

University of Leicester Boat Club, one of the biggest mixed gender clubs on campus, had an amazing early Christmas present

Grant Funding - Boatover the festive period. Ryan Asher, the Club's President, led on a bid to receive lottery funded investment from Sport England via the Small Grants Fund. The application focused on solving an equipment bottleneck problem the club faces, with more boats needed to cope with the clubs ever increasing membership.

Thankfully, the Small Grants application was successful and the maximum award of £10,000 was awarded to the club, this funding will be spent on purchasing boats for the men's and women's crews. The addition of these boats will go a long way in improving participation and engagement in the sport, allowing more people time out on the water. Importantly, high performing members will have the opportunity to use these boats as pairs in upcoming national selection events taken place in Lincolnshire.

Ryan Asher, President of the University of Leicester Boat Club on receiving the award said "We are delighted to have been awarded this grant, especially after all the work it took over the summer. The club will benefit hugely from this into the future and I am excited to see how the new equipment will benefit athletes into the future."
