What is Leicester Academy?

Leicester Academy - coachingThe Leicester Academy is the central hub for sport related coaching, officiating and volunteering opportunities at the University. Students who take part in the programme are given the chance to gain subsidised coaching/officiating qualifications in a sport of their choice. Students are then able to exhibit their new found skills by delivering sport sessions in local schools, demonstrating their ability to function in a real working environment to potential employers.

The Leicester Academy also gives students the opportunity to volunteer at major sporting events throughout the academic year, including the annual Varsity competition between the University and local rivals De Montfort.

As part of the Academy you will develop many key transferrable skills that employers are crying out for, such as leadership, communication, planning and organising. Furthermore, the Leicester Academy is HEAR accredited and a fast track to completing the Leicester Award,

What do students think?

Leicester Academy Activator 2

“Leicester Academy has allowed me to give something back and be engaged not just with doing something extra at university, but going out into the community and providing children with after school, extracurricular sports and through the project I have seen them progress and really enjoy what I have done with them and build a good relationship with the school's staff and children. I would encourage people to get involved and volunteer!”- Jack Stokes, Geography

“Leicester Academy has been a lovely experience for me; spending time with children in schools is a good way of taking mind off work commitments and develops communication with younger ages. But more importantly, it is a great feeling to be a positive influence to children in terms of encouraging the resonance of sport in the long-term and trying to instil an enthusiasm for it. I really recommend Leicester Academy to anybody who values sport and loves interacting with the younger generation, it benefits you as a student as well as the children.” - Nikita Choudhary

The Leicester Academy Festival

The Leicester Academy Festival is the culmination of the project, an event held at the University where primary school students visit for a day filled with learning and sports activities. The children are given a chance to experience a glimpse of life at the University, explore the campus and enjoy an array for sporting activities. The 2017 Festival saw 100 school children visit in our biggest and best Festival to date!
