COVID-19 update

At present, our post-16 summer schools in July 2020 are still scheduled to go ahead as planned. We will continue to monitor the situation carefully, and comply with government advice and University of Leicester guidance in all scenarios. As such these events are subject to change in the coming weeks as the situation progresses. Therefore applications for our summer schools remain open. (updated 18 March 2020)

Why attend summer school?

  • Get a real experience of living and studying at university, including 3 nights in our accommodation at the beautiful Oadby Student Village
  • Develop essential skills required to be a successful university student
  • Meet and get to know other students from across the country
  • Engage in thought-provoking lectures and interactive workshops delivered by our team of world-class academics
  • Fun evening events including ‘the big quiz’ (prizes to be won!), movie and games night and the end of summer school party and awards

At the University of Leicester, we are Citizens of Change. One of the biggest challenges facing our planet right now is climate change, so for our post-16 summer school in 2020 the theme is simply that - "Climate Change". All of the sessions from the departments listed below will be based around climate change from their own academic perspective:

  • Criminology & Law
  • English
  • Geography
  • History & American Studies
  • Maths
  • Modern Languages (Spanish)
  • Natural Sciences
  • Nursing
  • Politics

Week B : Tuesday 28 July 2020 – Friday 31 July 2020 (Medicine)

Our second week focuses on Medicine and is for students considering a career as a doctor. Sessions are scheduled to include:

  • Introduction to Medicine (GP, Psychiatry and Acute)
  • Introduction to Allied Health careers (including Physiotherapy, Nursing, Midwifery and Operating Department Practice)
  • Medical taster sessions covering cardiovascular, respiratory and neuromuscular
  • Applying to medical school and preparing a personal statement
  • Preparing for UCAT
  • Preparing for interview (MMI focus)
  • Workshop on resilience, good mental health and empathy

Who are summer schools for?

You must currently be in year 12 and under the age of 18. Other eligibility criteria will be assessed, please see “Apply for a place now” below.

How much does it cost?

Nothing! Our summer schools are entirely free to attend, which includes your accommodation, all of your food and transport to and from the summer school!

Please take extra care when completing the application form, in particular the section about eligibility. The more eligibility criteria that you satisfy, the better chance you will have of being allocated a place on the summer school. Evidence may be required post-application for certain criteria, so please be honest and accurate with your answers to these questions.

The deadline for applications is 15 May 2020, and we will contact you shortly after this with the outcome of your application.
