Mature Learner Support

At the University of Leicester we value the experience and variety that mature learners bring to our student body. As such, we are working towards providing a number of events and support for mature learners from the point they are considering higher education all the way to graduation. If you are a prospective mature student please see our Mature Student pages. The information below is for colleges who provide courses for mature students heading to university. We are happy to visit colleges and invite mature students to visit the campus.

All of our activities can be found in our brochure here.

Before University

We have a series of information, advice and guidance sessions specifically designed to meet the needs of mature learners.  These include:

  • Advice on applying to university, how to choose a university, course and student finance.
  • Access to HE Advice Day on campus for students studying on Access to HE or Access to Medicine courses.
  • Sessions on campus and in college to provide advice and guidance on writing personal statements, study skills and decision making.

These sessions are part of a programme that covers an academic year and can be delivered as part of a programme or as individual sessions as requested. These activities are best delivered at key points during Access to HE courses to match with progress through the academic year.

In addition to the formal sessions, we have an e-mentoring programme for potential University of Leicester students.  Current students provide moral support and guidance to Access to HE students via a secure online platform from November to July each year.

We are also keen to develop sessions and resources for pre-Access students to give them a head start on the UCAS process and planning their futures.

If you would like further information about these sessions or are interested in any of the activities above please email Charlotte Barratt

At the transition into university

Once the applications have been made and accepted we help with transitions from college or home to university with an induction programme.  Any student applying to the University of Leicester who is over 21 years old at registration is invited to take part in the Mature Student Welcome Event which is held in the week before the start of the academic year.

This event gives a gentle welcome to the University before the rest of the students arrive.  It includes introductions to support services available, some study skills refreshers and a chance to meet other mature students.
