Students in Classrooms

Placing our students into classrooms in local schools and colleges is a really valuable way to raise young people's aspirations towards Higher Education (HE). Acting as positive and inspiring role models, students taking part in the Undergraduate Module Scheme also gain practical classroom experience, develop transferable skills and build confidence working in new situations. Students taking part are keen to share their passion for their subject, encourage young people in their learning and engage with the local community.  Students receive training and support throughout their placement for these important roles.

Undergraduate Module Scheme placement (UMS)

A number of Academic Departments, supported by the Widening Participation team, offer an undergraduate module option with a subject engagement focus, the experiential part of which is a school based placement.  Students undertake 30 hours in a school or college in Leicester/shire during the Spring term by visiting on a weekly basis and receive academic credit for this work.  Students are selected and trained for the role by the Widening Participation team and are supported by a Link Teacher in their placement school.  Opportunities are available in Primary, Secondary and post-16 education.

The modules are available to final year undergraduates in Maths, Physics, English, Archaeology and Geology and second year undergraduates in History and Modern Foreign Languages. Students will be contacted by their Department during the academic year prior to the module with details of information session dates and how to apply.
