Undergraduate Modules in Schools (UMS) 2019 - 2020 cohort

Applications for the modules listed below are open from Friday 1st February and close on Wednesday 6th March at 5pm.  Please note that no late applications will be accepted. Please ensure you read all the information below and make a note of all key dates before submitting your online application via the link sent out to you by your department. 

Information about module content has been sent to you by your Department via email – please read this prior to applying to so you aware of the structure, timings and commitment required. Alongside academic work, these optional modules also involve students undertaking a 30 hour placement in a school/college in Leicester during the spring term of 2020 by visiting on a weekly basis to directly supporting learning in the classroom. Students are selected and trained for the role by the Widening Participation team on behalf of the Departments. If you have any queries, please email us at sic@le.ac.uk

Who can apply?

Students from Maths, Physics, English, Geology and Archaeology and Ancient History who will be in their final year in 2019/20 should apply now (February 2019).  Students will find out by 11th March if they have been shortlisted for the next stage.

Students from History and Languages (to support French/Spanish) who will be in their second year in 2019/20 should apply now (February 2019). Students will find out by 11th March if they have been shortlisted for the next stage.

 Assessment Centres:

Students shortlisted for the next stage will need to attend a group assessment centre.  Our staff team will observe groups of students undertaking two scenario based tasks to help us make final decisions on who to select for the module places.  You should make a note of the relevant date now, as you will need to attend if you are shortlisted:

  • Wednesday 20th March 2019 – Times TBC

 Students who are currently away from Leicester on a Year Abroad or Year in Industry etc. should apply in the normal way but will be interviewed by Skype if shortlisted, which will be arranged individually.  

How to apply:

Complete this online form, ensuring that you fully answer the questions and include all requested information.  Please pay particular attention to completing the Personal Statement in section 5.

The link to complete the form will be circulated by your module lead. Please contact sic@le.ac.uk if you are unable to access the form.

The deadline for applications is 5pm on Wednesday 6th March 2019.

IMPORTANT: You are unable to save and return to this form.  Therefore, we recommend that you have all of the information required to hand and that you write your personal statement entry in a Word document prior to completing the online form.  You can then copy and paste your personal statement into Section 5 before submitting your final application. Please save your own copy of the Word document in case there are any problems submitting the online form. Please note that if you leave the online form without submitting data, all information will be lost.  Incomplete forms cannot be considered.

In the Personal Statement (section 5) please include information about the following points. Please use separate paragraphs, give clear and detailed answers and provide examples to demonstrate key skills and personal qualities.  The five questions marked * will be used for shortlisting of candidates.

  1.  Your motivations for wanting to undertake the module*
  2.  Why you feel it is important to communicate your own subject to a school-aged audience*
  3. Explain what you think some of the issues and barriers are that can affect school-aged young people in their education*
  4.  What key skills you have that are relevant to the role and examples of when you have demonstrated these*
  5.  What personal qualities you possess that you consider make you suitable for the role*
  6.  Please include relevant details of any voluntary or paid experience relating to working in a school or similar environment.  You do not have to have school experience to apply for the module but this information will help us in organising placements if you are successful.
  7.  You may also list any other relevant experience or knowledge that you would bring to the role
