Students in Classrooms

There are two main schemes placing our students in classrooms, Undergraduate Module placements and the ‘Leicester Award for Employability: Tomorrow’s Teachers’. Both of these offer trained students the chance to gain practical classroom experience in a local school or college and a structured method of reflecting on their experiences. Many of the students taking part are interested in teaching or working with young people as a career and are keen to engage with the local community. Placements are sourced and managed centrally by the School and College Services team and all students have an enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check undertaken for these roles.

Undergraduate Module Placements (including UAS)

A number of Departments offer an undergraduate module option with a subject engagement focus, the experiential part of which is a school based placement.  Students undertake 30 hours in a school or college in Leicester/shire during the Spring term by visiting on a weekly basis and receive academic credit for this work.  Students are selected and trained for the role by the School and College Services team and are supported by a Link Teacher in their placement school.  Opportunities are available in Primary, Secondary and post-16 education.

The modules are available to final year undergraduates in Maths, Physics, Archaeology and Geology and second year undergraduates in History. Students will be contacted by their Department during the academic year prior to the module with details of information session dates and how to apply.

Leicester Award for Employability: Tomorrow's Teachers

The ‘Leicester Award for Employability: Tomorrow’s Teachers’ is a University accredited award offering successful applicants 9 hours of high level training and a 30 hour placement in one of our partner schools or colleges in Leicester/shire.  Undergraduate and postgraduate students from all disciplines are eligible to apply and opportunities are available in Primary and Secondary (with some limited post-16 placements).  Applications open at the beginning of the Autumn term, followed by training during the Spring term. Placements take place in the period after the university exams finish in June and when the schools close in mid-July. Please note that the Tomorrow’s Teacher’s scheme is only open to students currently registered at the University of Leicester.

The scheme gives students the chance to:

  • Discover what teaching is really like and gain important in-school experience
  • Work alongside experienced teachers and school staff
    Develop new and transferable skills
  • Receive high level training from experienced practitioners
  • Help to raise the aspirations of young people and act as strong role models for Higher Education
  • Gain formal recognition of their achievement on their degree transcript

For further information about the scheme and application details, please visit the Tomorrow’s Teachers web pages.

For further information on either of these schemes, or if you are school/college interested in finding out more about hosting placements, please contact Lucy Croucher (Students in Classrooms Co-ordinator) at lac23@le.ac.uk
