Getting Your Visa - Step By Step

Making sure that you have all the correct information to ensure that your visa application is successful is really important. This step by step guide will help you prepare for your application.  The university has specialist immigration advisors who can help you prepare and submit your application. We strongly recommend that you book an appointment with them to help you submit your application.  You can do so by e-mailing

Step 1: Check your CAS Statement

When your CAS is issued, please check it carefully to ensure that all of your details and your course details are correct. Please ensure that it shows any fee payments or accommodation payments you have made to the University (this will not apply for students who are in private accommodation), and has a note to confirm details any scholarships you receive.

New students can learn about the process of receiving a CAS here. For continuing students who are renewing there visa, you will be required to submit a request for a new CAS. The application form can be downloaded here (Word).

Step 2: Prepare your financial documents and other supporting documents.

For advice on which documents you will need to prepare for your visa application and for more information on how to meet the financial requirements, please visit the UKCISA website.

Please note, you must ensure that you have already held the required minimum balance for 28 consecutive days, by the time you submit your Tier 4 visa application. The date of submission is the date that you pay the application fee, which is usually done online.

Step 3: Register and complete the visa application form.

If you are applying for your visa from within the UK, please use the form found here.

We are able to offer BRP collection on our campus rather than collection at a Post Office. To ensure your BRP is delivered to us for collection, please enter the University of Leicester code: 2HE539 in the 'Alternative Location' field in the BRP Collection Page.

Step 4: Pay Immigration Health surcharge and application fees.

As part of your application, you will be asked to make a payment for Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS). You will be unable to complete your application until this payment is made. For more information about how much the fees will be for you, please visit here.

After you have paid both your IHS you then have the option of paying for the visa application (check current processing times). For more information on the Immigration Health Surcharge, please visit here.

Step 5: Submit your application and supporting documents

Once you have submitted your visa application online and booked your Biometric appointment (see below). You will need to scan and upload your supporting documents listed on your Document Checklist to the UKVCAS website, for further information see below.

Step 6: Attend your biometric appointment

As part of the application process (after you have submitted your online visa application) you will be required to give biometric information. This means a digital scan of your fingerprints and facial image.

You may also be randomly selected attend a separate ‘credibility’ interview. If you are called for interview, you may be asked questions and assessed on:

•Ability to speak English (regardless of IELTS score)

•Knowledge of intended course of study

•Academic/Employment background

•Future Plans


If you are called to a credibility interview you must attend. Remember to prepare carefully and request a transcript at your interview appointment. During your application process please ensure that you check your junk mail as this could be an email from the Home Office asking you to attend an interview. If you fail to attend a credibility interview your application could be refused

Step 7: Get the result of your application

If your visa application has been granted, you will receive an email or letter from the Home Office to confirm this. You will subsequently, receive your BRP, please check the length and conditions of your visa are correct. If you notice that anything on your BRP card is incorrect, please contact in the first instance.
