Attendance Management System (AMS)

AMS is the attendance management system for all campus-based taught students and was introduced at the start of the new academic year for 2016/17.

AMS is an in-house developed system, which replaced existing attendance registration systems. It uses tried and tested hardware already being used in many Universities. These are Salto Card Readers and many have already been installed in lecture theatres and teaching rooms. The system works by pulling information from the University's timetabling system CMIS. When students enter a teaching space with card readers installed, they simply touch their University ID card to the reader to register their attendance.

Moving away from a paper-based system will save time for both students in teaching events and staff who process their attendance information. Our new attendance management system will ensure compliance with UKVI requirements for sponsoring Tier 4 students. It also ensures we're fully compliant with the Student Loans Company (SLC), in relation to students who have been withdrawn.

The implementation of a new attendance management system has been reflected in an updated Policy on Attendance at Timetabled Teaching Events.

The new system has been in for medical students since 5 September 2016. All other campus-based taught students used the new system from when their timetabled teaching events started (late September/early October 2016).

Departmental staff who manage student attendance records attended training sessions to use the new system. These provided an overview of the Policy on Attendance at Timetabled Teaching Events, as well as a hands-on session to practice using the new system.
