How to find EU Research Funding

How to find EU research funding

Various resources are available to help you find the EU funding scheme which is most suitable for your needs. The funding database ResearchProfessional is available to all members of the University and contains details of many European and overseas funding opportunities in addition to ones in the UK. The UK Research Office (UKRO) provides a tailored information service where you can register for updates, news, events and call information for subjects that you are interested in.

The UKRO Subscriber Services are available to all members of the University. To make use of them, Create a Profile using your University email address.

Horizon 2020

Horizon 2020 is structured around three main pillars plus two cross-cutting work programmes. Click the diagram to enlarge.

Horizon 2020 is the European Commission's largest ever research and innovation funding programme, with a total budget of over €70bn running from 2014 to 2020, structured around three pillars: Excellent Science, Industrial Leadership and Societal Challenges. For further information about the opportunities available under each pillar, visit the Research Support Office's Horizon 2020 overview pages.

You can find full details of current and upcoming calls, along with information about the specific topics for which proposals are being invited, by searching or browsing the EU Research & Innovation Participant Portal. To do so, select the 'Funding Opportunities' tab and then use the menu on the left hand side of the page to navigate.

Other European and overseas funding

There are various opportunities for research funding outside the Horizon 2020 programme. These include Erasmus+, Competitiveness of Enterprises and SMEs (COSME), the Research Fund for Coal and Steel, Creative Europe grants, European Co-operation in Science and Technology (COST) actions and programmes run by specific European Commission Directorates-General. Opportunities can be found through UKRO Subscriber Services, Research Professional or through the EU Research & Innovation Participant Portal.

Please contact the EU Team in Research Support Services if you would like any help accessing these services or choosing the most appropriate funding opportunity.
