4.5 Freedom of Information and Data Protection requests

How to respond to requests for access to data under the Freedom of Information Act or the Data Protection Act.
  1. Researchers must immediately refer any requests for information through the Freedom of Information Act, or for access to personal data through the Data Protection Act, to Information Assurance Services. You must not respond to any requests yourself.
  2. Researchers must be aware that research data may be accessible through the Freedom of Information Act, although exemptions do apply.
  3. You must be aware that individuals have a general right to see any personal data held about themselves, though exemptions do apply to personal data held as part of a research project. The University’s policy is to provide access to personal data where this does not incur a significant administrative overhead.
