Horizon 2020

Horizon 2020 is the European Commission's largest ever research and innovation funding programme, with a total budget of over €70bn running from 2014 to 2020. The European Commission has created a short animation which will give you a general overview of the programme (3:06).

Horizon2020 is structured around three pillars, each of which contains several work programmes that consists of calls for proposals.

'Excellent Science' is is dedicated to funding excellent research and researchers, with the overall aim of securing Europe's long term competitiveness through enhanced research and development capacity

'Industrial Leadership' looks at ways to make Europe's industries more competitive and to increase investment in research and innovation. There is a strong emphasis on the participation of industry, particularly small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

'Societal Challenges' is intended to find solutions to identified 'priority challenges' through research and innovation, predominantly through collaborative projects bringing together research teams from different EU Member States.
