Introducing the Online Kit-Catalogue

Kitcat Logo correctThe Kit–Catalogue is an online equipment database which provides staff and students with an accessible and detailed directory of research equipment, specialist machines and facilities across campus, and across the Midlands Universities Consortium (Midland Innovation, previously M5).

The main purpose of the Kit-Catalogue is to reduce the need for costly double purchasing of high capital equipment, though it can also be used to attract prospective students, staff and researchers in addition to it’s potential for generating revenue by making equipment available for industries and others to hire.

The catalogue is based upon an open source software developed by the University of Loughborough’s Centre for Engineering and Design Education and IT services with Professor Rachel Thompson of the Materials Research School.

All research equipment exceeding the value of £25,000 or those items that would be useful and eligible for use across the university should be included in the Kit-Catalogue.

The information held in the Kit-Catalogue is now in IRIS. A how-to-guide is available and explains how users can browse, search and link to pieces of equipment to their IRIS profile. Equipment can be linked to associated publications, grants and professional activities.
