What does RED do?

Each function within the Research and Enterprise Division (RED) has specialists for your college who have an in-depth understanding of your field of research and the relevant industries and funding bodies. Research Policy, Performance and Development

  • Funder and Client liaison. Includes all major funders, RCUK, EU and Charity funders such as Wellcome Trust, Leverhulme Trust, British Heart Foundation etc.
  • Research Networks
  • Major bid co-ordination, strategic development and support
  • Strategy development and delivery support. Including management, curation and monitoring of performance for Research and REF.
  • Supporting University research-related planning, including servicing the research committees and related groups

Enterprise Development

  • Strategic partnerships

  • Client liaison

  • Enterprise Networks

  • Major bid co-ordination, development and support

  • Continuing Professional Development

  • Strategy development and delivery support

  • Strategy development and delivery support. Including management, curation and monitoring of performance for Enterprise and HEBCIS.

  • Supporting University enterprise-related planning, including servicing the enterprise committees and related groups.


  • Management of IP, Commercialisation and Spin-out portfolios
  • Development of research outputs towards commercial products or services through:
      • Licensing
      • Spin outs
      • Translational grants
      • Consultancy
      • Other relevant mechanisms

Research Support Services

  • Supporting the grant process
  • Negotiating research-related contracts and agreements
  • Advice on costing and pricing
  • Promoting the responsible conduct of research and compliance with regulatory and sponsor requirements
  • Facilitating technology and knowledge transfer in liaison with Research Development, Enterprise Development and Commercialisation
  • Post-award financial management of research and other services rendered accounts
  • Training, information and support for researcher skills development

Strategy and Operations

  • Strategic business planning (operations)
  • Overall quality and performance monitoring. Also includes continuous improvement through customer feedback and process review.
  • Enterprise Policy and strategic initiatives for Enterprise
  • Financial and risk management review
  • Resource allocation and budget setting
  • Marketing and communications
  • Also includes: development and operation of the Division, ensuring that Functions and College-focused teams within the Division support the academic activities of the Colleges effectively.
