A consultation following Lord Stern's review of the Research Excellence Framework is underway. Respond via your College.

HEFCE has issued a consultation document for REF 2021, based on Lord Stern’s review of the Research Excellence Framework.

The consultation, which takes the last assessment exercise, REF 2014, as its starting point, revolves around several key themes including reducing the burden of the exercise, particularly on individual staff, broadening the definition of impact, recognising interdisciplinarity, and limiting the ability for universities to 'game' the REF.

The University will be making a single unified response to this consultation and welcomes comments from any staff affected by or interested in this exercise.

If you work in an academic department and want to comment, you can find out from your departmental research director how the response is being handled in your College and feed your thoughts in to that. Feedback is needed by 19 January 2017.

If you are a member of corporate services and would like to have some input, or just to know more, please contact Lynne Parsons ( of the Research Strategy and Policy Team in RED.

The consultation documents can be found here:

It is worth noting that responses to HEFCE are only accepted via an online form, although for convenience the questions on that online form are also available for download in a word document. The format of the consultation is to solicit answers to 44 specific questions. The response to each question is limited to 500 words, and responses will therefore need to be concise so that all responses received can be combined and edited.
