Print Services wins industry award for second year running

Congratulations to Print Services who have been recognised at the annual Association of Print Managers in Education (APME) Awards.

APME 2015

Ian Hickman receives APME Award from Paul Smout of Morgana

The award for Best Finished Product came for Print Services’ own brochure which is used to promote the service to external businesses in Leicester. The brochure uses a highly innovative finish with the inner sheet cut to shape with special perforations, to enable the document to be folded so that it expands outwards when opened. It is then glued to the outer cover by hand.

Ian Hickman, Head of Print Services, said, ‘We wanted to produce a document that showcased our creativity and finishing capabilities. We operate in a highly competitive market and we wanted something that helps us to stand out. With this document we’ve achieved what we set out to do. We handled the whole project in-house, from copywriting to design, print and finishing, which many printers would not have been able to do. I’m pleased that the expertise involved in delivering this document has been recognised by our peers in other university print units.’

The award comes one year after Print Services won an APME award for Best In-House Print (Digital) for the Residential and Commercial Services Christmas cracker campaign.

Christmas cracker campaign wins national award

Print Services has picked up an award at the Association of Print Managers in Education annual awards ceremony for Residential and Commercial Services’ (RACS) Christmas cracker campaign.

Ian Hickman receives award from Jason Barnes of Xerox

The award, for Best In-House Print (Digital), was presented to Ian Hickman, Head of Print Services, by Jason Barnes from award sponsor, Xerox. The campaign was praised for the quality of the finished product, the use of variable data and security.

Frances Stone, Director of RACS, said, ‘I am delighted that this campaign has been recognised by our peers in the print industry. The Christmas cracker promotion was innovative and fun, ideal for that time of year. It showcased the creativity of the University’s design and print services to great effect.’

The Christmas cracker campaign ran throughout December 2013. Anyone spending over £5 in a catering outlet received a cracker which had a tear-off label. They would then remove the label to find out if they had won a prize, which ranged from a £100 le card to free food and discounts on certain products. Approximately two thirds of the crackers contained prizes, so the chances of winning were high for a campaign of this type.

Print Services was asked to produce 3000 cracker-shaped cards using variable data in two ways. The crackers were digitally printed and knifed to create the cracker shape. Firstly, they printed the correct number of crackers for each prize type, ranging from one to 680. They then overprinted a unique identifier number in order to avoid crackers being redeemed more than once. Finally, they printed sticky labels which were placed over the prize information at one end.

The design of the crackers was handled by the University’s Design Services team, who also produced a range of marketing materials which were printed by Print Services.
