A conference for year 12 - 13 students at University of Leicester to take place on 8 September

Issued by University of Leicester on 3 September 2018

Young people considering a career in medicine are invited to a conference that will help them on the route to achieving their ambitions, and introduce psychiatry as an exciting medical discipline.

Not enough junior doctors choose to specialise in psychiatry, which has led, over the years, to a recruitment crisis. The conference will encourage a future generation of medics to recognise the value of psychiatry and be inspired to consider a career in the field.

The third ‘Medicine Calling’ conference will be held on Saturday 8 September 2018 at the George Davies Centre, University of Leicester and is open to year 12 and 13 students. Those who attended the conference in previous years have described it as  “eye-opening”,  “inspiring” and “hugely informative”.

The day itself will comprise an exciting programme of events, including interactive workshops about psychiatry, advice on applying to medical school and inspirational speakers.

Dr Rachel Winter, Academic Clinical Lecturer in Medical Education and Old Age Psychiatry at the University of Leicester, said: “This conference is a great way to begin to learn about the complexity and fascination behind  a career that genuinely involves both the ‘art’ and ‘science’ of modern medical practice. I would encourage any young person interested in a potential medical career to come along and discover more about this exciting and captivating specialty.”

According to recent research by the Medical Schools’ Council, 80% of applicants to medical school come from 20% of schools and colleges in the UK. With a focus on recruiting those to attend from a less advantaged background, the organisers hope that having attended the conference, students will feel that medicine and psychiatry are professions accessible to all.

The conference is a part of a wider initiative called Medicine Calling, which is working in association with the University of Leicester, The Royal College of Psychiatrists and NHS Health Education England to inform and guide young people considering a career in medicine, specifically psychiatry.
