An abundance of events designed to help new students settle in will take place from 25-29 September

The University of Leicester is celebrating the arrival of a new student cohort during Welcome Week, which takes place from Monday 25 September to Friday 29 September.

Last week was Early Arrivals and International Welcome Week - when the University of Leicester officially opens its doors to all new students from around the world.

The events on offer this week will encourage a smooth transition for arriving students into their new phase of life - with a range of free fairs, medical services, and a formal welcoming ceremony.

The week kicks off on Monday 25 September with a departmental course induction, during which students will meet their tutors and fellow students. There will also be a welcome marquee running throughout the day from 10.00am-4.00pm, offering warm welcoming spaces and games to calm first-day nerves.

On Tuesday 26 September, students will be invited to attend a Matriculation ceremony. This formal welcome will take place in De Montfort Hall, during which students sit together as a community and are given information about what they can expect from their time at University.

The Fabulous First Year Fair will also be running throughout the day from 10.00am-4.00pm in the marquee. There will be all sorts of fun activities to take part in and prizes up for grabs. As part of Fabulous First Year, the University is offering Read at Leicester, inviting all new students and members of staff to read 'The Power' by Naomi Alderman.

From Wednesday 27 September, a number of fairs will be taking place in the Students’ Union from 10.00am - 4.00pm.

Community-minded students can head over to Queen’s Hall in the Students’ Union, where the volunteering fair will be located. The Societies Fair will be set up in The Scholar, where students can meet members from and sign up to an abundance of extra-curricular activities, from cheerleading to chess and everything in-between. The Sports and Active Life Fair in the marquee will illustrate the manifold possibilities for students to engage in sports clubs.

The Students’ Union Training Room is another important location to visit, as staff from the Victoria Park Health Centre will be there offering advice on how to register as a patient. Once registered with the Victoria Park Health Centre, students under 25 can also get the MenACWY vaccination against meningitis and septicaemia, which is recommended by the National Health Service.

The Medical Training and Vaccination Room will run from 10.00am - 4.00pm.

The Fresh Fair, Societies Fair and Medical Training Room continue on 28 and 29 September, all running from 10.00am - 4.00pm in the same locations.

The University Snapchat account, ‘uniofleicester’, has geofilters that can be used throughout the week.

The week provides an opportunity to make new friends, become well-acquainted with campus, and discover the many ways that you can make the most of your time at university.

University of Leicester Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Student Experience Professor Jon Scott said: “We are really looking forward to welcoming all our new students to the University of Leicester.

“Our students come to us from all over the UK and from over 100 other countries. Colleagues from all areas of the University have put together a great programme designed to help all these students settle in and make friends as quickly as possible so they can get the most out of their time studying with us.”
